I wish we could have stayed around for the masquerade, but we needed to get headed back to Prescott Valley for the night. They closed the dealers room and we packed up. Did get to have dinner with Adam and Penny at Fudruckers before we got out of town. Had a toast to the con and getting Bushi Tales #1 and 2 done! ;D But, back to the con... Here's the sketch Dave did for Bob/JLA FAN- Here's Bret and me and my sketch he did for me. And here's a quick sketch I did for someone while I was at our table. Tess Fowler's "Nancy" sketch. This was the quickest way out from behind our tables. It's cute when Tess does it, just plain sad when I do! BTW- you can see some of Tess' Hellboy sketch cards here- www.inkworks.com/products/hellboy/swordofstorms/sketch/index.htmlAnd last Adam hanging out at the Bushi Tales table in his cool tee and hat. Getting late so I'll post more later. Lin

I thought that Tess's sketches were really awesome. Like the Nancy sketch she did...there is so much movement in the pose and the facial expression is so cool. It is not every day that you see an extremely talented woman like her in the business.

And she's a fellow "lefty"! ;D
It was a lot of fun to watch her draw. I don't get a chance to see that as much as I used to. Only now and then at an MSCA meeting if someone has a Sharpie and a napkin! I'm hoping we can start meeting again on Sunday mornings at the bookstore/coffee shop and/or Wednesday nights at Adam's for figure drawing class.

A lot of artists have a little sign that says they are taking commissions, and how much they charge. For artists I am unfamiliar with, I generally will look at their other work and see how well I like it (this is what I did with Ben Glendenning). For Rob Osborne, he did the cover for the con program, which I thought was pretty cool, so I wanted to get a piece from him.
Other artists I will actively approach, especially if I have been a long-time fan of their work (like Steve Rude, Bret Belvins, Phil Hester, James A. Owen).
Then if there are friends of the CGS community (like Dave Beaty), I will definitely seek them out.
My basic advice is to set a budget for yourself, and pursue the artists that you are the biggest fan of first, the ones where a piece by them will have the most personal/sentimental value to you.
For me, this was Perez & Rude. Beyond those 2 guys, the rest was gravy. Fun to get, but I came to Phoenix mostly because Perez was going to be there. _________________ Bob Bretall - JLAFan www.comicspace.com/jlafan/Chris wrote:
Great sketches, Bob! My faves are the Perez and Beatty. _________________ Chris Murrin

Larry Ward in car accident
From: Larry Ward Sent: Wednesday, August 1, 2007 8:49 AM Subject: Yes, I'm Alive.......Sort Of
It all started one week ago today when I took a leisurely drive to the local farmers market to purchase some sweet corn and tomates. With that task successfully completed, I then headed to McDonald's, a noted staple of life to many of us today. I never made it....
I was driving my old 1983 Chevy K-10 4X4 pickup with oversized tires and a 6" lift kit. I was driving along at about 35 mph when an older lady of 78 years turned into my path with her 1999 Toyota Camry. I hit her full force broadside with the front of my truck. I was wearing a seatbelt, but was still thrown around like a rag doll, hitting my head on something very hard knocking me out. I don't know how long I was "gone" but when I awakened all I could hear were the EMTs and police asking my name. Suffice it to say that the accident was an incredibly traumatic experience; my truck was totaled and I have a head injury which will take a long time to heal. With the painkillers and that injury, putting words together in a coherent sentence has been diffiult at times, but I'm catching on to the routine again. And with an injured right shoulder, my recently revised baseball career may once again be over - to the probable relief of Iron Hands Glass and Captain (Steve) Kirk of the Smallville Meteors.
However, all in all, I'm lucky to be alive, and I welcome second chances in life. I have no anger or resentment toward the other driver who - the police said - did cause the accident - as accidents do happen. Now, if I can actually get her insurance company - State Farm - to acknowledge that I do exist, things might be a little less difficult.
I do want to sincerely thank everyone for their cards, letters and gifts, and for their wonderful heartfelt words of kindness and encouagement. I hope to see everyone again soon.
Please take care always, and always wear your seatbelts. Larry Ward
And from Larry's wife-
Hi Everybody,
Just wanted to thank you all again for all your kind remarks and prayers for Larry. He was very surprised and comforted by your many supportive words. He's a little embarassed by all the attention he has received, as he is a very quiet and private person.
Right now, he is recovering from the accident, though he does have quite a bit of pain associated with head trauma, and cuts and bruises. He is heavily medicated, so I'm keeping him comfortable with those. He swears he will be back to work in a few days. Yeah, right!!! Not on my watch. I do believe all will turn out fine, but it has been quite a scare the last 24 hours.
Again, thank you so very much for your many kindnesses and if anything changes, I will let you know.
Most Sincerely, Kathleen
If anyone wants to drop Larry a note or send a get well card, please send it to:
