Thought I'd start a thread for the art I'm working on to show at the Superman Celebration in Metropolis, IL this June. www.supermancelebration.net/First up is a close-up painting of Tom Welling as Clark Kent/Kal-El flying. First I sketch and crop the image using an Artograph projector and a pencil. Usually can't get a lot of detail with photos like this, so I end up just getting an outline and a few key reference points. This is where knowing how to draw comes in! So I start using grey in my airbrush (VL-3 and Createx) to sketch out the drawing. I figured I'd work on two paintings at once, so here's the other. It's a tight close up of Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor from the cover of 'Smallville' magazine. I start off drawing it off in pencil, and a little Sharpie marker. Not too much, just where there will be a lot of black- Sharpie will bleed back thru. Sketching in black and grey. (Heh, heh, he looks like a surprised Daddy Warbucks!) Adding some details and shading. That's as far as I got last night. It was fun to get out the airbrush and have 'Smallville' season 4 disk 1 playing in the background! More to come...

That is so cool to see it coming along you can already really see the resemblance. Are they both going to be B&W or color?

Time for more updates... Here's the Lex- I stayed up too late working on it Saturday and got sleepy and sloppy. The airbrush fighting me didn't help any! I'm going to have to re-work his face. The features just weren't right. D'oh! Did a little more on this Clark/Kal-El painting. Sunday was better. The brush started off a bit squirrelly, but I kept working with it and it all started to flow a lot better. Here's Clark with the Kryptonian symbol. That's all for now. Got to get back to coloring pages! Lin

Dude- That they all look good. I think the Lex is fixable but the Clark with the Kryptonian symbol looks freaking awesome! You definitely need to do those Scott shots. Cuz nobody has seen those and they'll be, "What's that from?". I'm going to work on some more warm up sketches tonight and start rolling out "classic" versions of Superman, Batman & Robin and Captain Marvel tonight. I'll post updates as I work on them too. Great job, keep em coming. The Superman Celebration is gonna have a killer artshow!

It boggles the mind at how realistic your artwork is by airbrushing!! You are doing a bang up job!!Can't wait to see more! Thanks for letting us see it as you work on it.

Yes. I'm working on a Nexus Painting with Lin and several classic style superhero pieces that will be in the Art Show. The first classic piece of Superman should be finished this weekend. I've received a pretty surprising response to my 1940's Batman sketches I did for FCBD. So if you like that you'll love these:
In the works: Classic Superman Classic Batman & Robin Classic Captain Marvel Classic JLA
and a very special Nexus tribute in honor of the Dude's return to Metropolis!
And the first piece from Pencil Neck Studios next title- ATLAS: The Living Robot. Which will debut in the follow up to "It came from beneath the drawing board" from the MSCA.

It really is amazing how talented you guys reall are. Lin, those are fantastic. Remember that fan fic called Grayson? I would love to see a sketch of the Superman that was represented in that trailer. He was an Awesome Superman! Especially with the gray hair at his temples. Now that would be a very cool piece!

Thanks- glad you all are digging them. ;D
If I can find any decent screen caps from it I would. I do have a shot or two from the World's Finest short.
I think the painting or two of Scott (official Superman of Metropolis) will be cool. They will be full color and pretty big!

Here is the first of the "classic" style heroes I'm doing for the Superman Celebration. A big thank you goes out to Micah who's learning digital inking/ cleanup but also how to digitally color. We worked together on this one. Here's Classic Superman... Pencil sketch: Pencils: Inks: Final: I've still got a little left to do before this is truly final but that's pretty much it. All these classic heroes will be on display in the Superman Celebration art show. Next up is Classic Batman & Robin...
