The local Star Wars FanForce and I have been kicking around ideas for a new logo and promo art to use at conventions and promote the new SMT site Nicki's working on for the club. So I came up with "ElVader"... Here's how I did the illustration- First I had to find some Elvis cape reference, and some Vader costume reference. I ended up taking a lot of reference shots of Tim and Traci's 2' tall Darth Vader statue. That helped a lot getting the right angle of the helmet, and good boot reference- since most of the time he's shot from the waist up or his cape is covering his boots. I drew the helmet and body separate, scanned them into Photoshop, got the proportions right, then printed it back out to ink. Here is the black/white line art. I inked it on Bristol with disposable tech pens using a lightbox. Then I scanned that back into Photoshop to color. Here are the color flats (solid areas of color). Here it is with some of the rendering/coloring done. I used many of the Photoshop tools- but mostly the magic wand and airbrush. Final illustration. Just have to add the new logo, tag lines, and web address for the promos. (I did the glow around the logo in Photoshop- much the same way I do lightsaber glows.) It's now on a new banner, promo items (postcards/business cards) and the SMT website. We also did a few tees for MidSouthCon. And inducted some new Hororary Members including Anakin Wade, Dean Zachary, John Jackson Miller, and John Ostrander. Go to www.memphisfanforce.com to see the new website Nicki is working on.
