WONDER WOMAN DAY
October 25-26 in New Jersey
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Several pop culture and comic book fans across the country have begun to celebrate Wonder Woman Day in October to raise money for local family services charities. The event has grown from one location raising $15,400 in 2006 to two locations raising around $30,000 in 2007. At Comic Fusion in Flemington, New Jersey, we are proud to have raised about $3,000 of that total for S.A.F.E. in Hunterdon, our local women’s shelter which automatically takes 25% of all cash donations to allocate to their children’s art therapy program.
WWD was founded by author Andy Mangels who runs the event in Portland, OR. The New Jersey event is run by Stacy Korn and Beth Delaney of Comic Fusion.
We’re soliciting for artwork and signed items. Since our deadline is October 1st, the CGS Supershow will be the perfect time & place for you to deliver any items to Beth who is proud to be a first time vendor with her own messenger bag line called Hero Fashions & Accessories.
At the request of S.A.F.E. in Hunterdon, we kindly ask that any donated pieces do not contain violent or sexually explicit images. They can’t contain weapons, fighting or skimpy versions of costumes. Consideration to having Wonder Woman shown in her beautiful Amazonia armor with shield, sword or lasso will be acceptable if she’s merely holding them and not fighting but it’s preferred by the board if weapons are left out all together. It’s very important to the board that they see our beloved Diana shown in a dignified posture. Think Empowerment, Bravery, Courage and Generosity. We had some very creative submissions last year. Any female character from comics is welcome but Wonder Woman and her universe is really what we’re going for; however, a delightful Kitty Pryde wouldn’t be rejected.
We’ve had wonderful artists contribute to the cause by sending in sketches, lithographs, and posters and writers who have sent in signed copies of their books for our auctions. The following is just a partial list of those who have previously donated:
